Since his departure from Capcom, Mega Man creator, Keiji Inafune has worked on many projects, including a mobile side scroller featuring the US President, Soul Sacrifice and Ninja Gaiden’s zombie slaying spin off, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. He’s even popped up to cameo in other games as a kidnapped uncle,a legendary sword or even a space battleship! Now, during his PAX appearance, Inafune has announced Mighty No. 9, which he will be developing alongside an all-star team of industry veteran developers.
Billed as an all new side-scrolling action game, Mighty No. 9 looks to be a spiritual successor to the original Mega Man series in all but the name. From the 8-boss format, story outline and character art, many aspects of Mighty No.9 invoke memories of the Blue Bomber. Even the title music sounds like something that wouldn’t feel out of place in the later Mega Man or Mega Man X games:
This should come as no surprise considering the array of talent that has been brought together for this project, many of which have worked on multiple Mega Man games throughout the series. Mighty No. 9 is planned on being released on PC but the team have announced PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U versions of the game as one of their stretch goals for the kickstarter.
From what has been shown so far, Mighty No. 9 looks like it could be an interesting evolution of the side scrolling action game genre. Plus, if Capcom aren’t going to make a new Mega Man game despite the repeated pleadings from the fans, who better than the series’ original creator to pick up the slack?
